Chapter 12.

My sleep was dreamless, and when it was time for me to wake up, I was woken by a gentle hand on my shoulder, shaking me.

When I opened my eyes, my father’s worried face was hovering over me. Relief flooded through me when I saw him, and I offered him what I hoped was a small smile.

“Oh. Hi,” I managed to say, though my throat was tight and sore. I swallowed and licked my dry lips, “I must have dozed off.”

I glanced around, trying to find my bearings. I was in my father’s office still, lying on the sofa. My mug of half-drunk hot chocolate sat in front of me on the coffee table and my head rested on a pillow I’d magicked up to make myself more comfortable. I told myself I wasn’t going to fall asleep, but clearly that hadn’t happened. I was out like a light.

I didn’t remember anything else after that.

I pushed myself up into a seated position, sleep keeping my arms and legs leaded and heavy. “How long have I been sleeping for?”

“I don’t know, but I’d guess a few hours,” Matlock said, sitting on the sofa opposite me.

He looked pale and drawn.

“Are you okay?” I asked, frowning at him. “Did you get into trouble?”

I pushed my glasses up my nose and peered at him.

He loosened the tight cravat style tie around his neck and sighed. “Yes. I did. Rather big trouble once I admitted that I knew about you and Courtney. That Ava had told me she had sisters.”

I frowned at him. “Why would you get into trouble for that?”

I wasn’t trying to be a pain with my questions. I genuinely wanted to know because I didn’t understand what the true problem was. It seemed insignificant to me so it made no sense that a punishment would be tied to such an action.

“They consider it a lie by omission and I’m sure Ava will be in trouble for it too,” he said with a grimace.

I bit my lip. Ava had known this was going to happen. That was why she’d been so reticent to introduce us to the magical realm, even though Courtney had so desperately wanted to be a part of it. And now, because of Courtney and me, Ava and my father were going to be penalized.

I closed my eyes, wishing I could have made some different choices. Then again, I wasn’t exactly sure what I could have done. I still had to save Courtney.

“So, what’s the punishment?” I asked, opening my eyes. “Should I be running for the hills with Courtney?” I glanced around the room looking for signs of life. “And where is my sister, by the way?”

Matlock waved his hand. “Courtney’s been safely transported to be with a cousin of mine,” he said nonchalantly. I didn’t like that he seemed to be so dismissive of her, but I hoped that meant he wasn’t worried. “She’s an incredible healer. I trust her with my life. Once Oliver diagnosed her, I knew I could get her the help she needed.
